We waited for Otello to come and live with us and visited him and his lovely family in Poland a few months before driving all the way across Europe to collect him so that he wouldn't be stressed and worried being flown in air cargo and would have company at all times.
We were warmly welcomed into the Blue Sun home and treated very well by the family and we asked lots of questions and I had also gone through his pedigrees with a fine tooth comb, right the way back to 1962 to make sure we were not in for any unsuspected health issues later on in our breeding program. It was not a decision I took lightly and even lost some friends along the way due to it.
It was finally time to collect Otello and it was a freezing -21 degrees in Poland and we had driven right through Germany and into southern Poland and taken a Spring break to see Auschwitz. The driving was hard going, 9 hours a day to keep to our schedule of collecting him. We set off on our return journey and got to out first over night stop in Berlin. This is where Otello had managed to run into a mirror in the hotel and 'kinked' his eye. I had antibiotics and arnica with us and being a Sunday and some sort of holiday, everywhere was shut. We drove right through Europe without stopping and caught an early train and stopped at the first vet we came to in the UK. We had already given him the right antibiotic, so onward to home.
I can't write anymore about this story without sobbing and feeling heartbroken for us and the delightful family who bred him in Poland, but within 3 weeks, Otello was in Rainbow Bridge. It was the hardest time of our lives and the end to breeding Devon Rex before it had only just begun as back in the December we had lost our dear TomFun.
The boys are buried together with their 'ratties' and have swoons of daffodils covering them. It's been a very hard 2012 and 2013. Otello was so perfect in every way, amazing coat, ear set, eyes, stop, body... everything. We still don't understand why he was taken from us and probably never will. Our hearts go out to his bravery during his last weeks.
